Intro
Hye and assalamualaikum. I hope you’re having amazing today because I have something new to tell you or else maybe you had known this before. But never mind, I want to tell again. First of all, yes today’s post is about hmm UDL. Hello, it’s UDL, not ODL okay. I know you are familiar with that because yeah nowadays we’re in phase ODL right. But now, I don’t want you to confuse more about this, so let’s check out what it actually UDL means. Alright, before that as you can see I really love my life before covid especially when I’m started in uni at Arau, Perlis. At that time, we are not supposed to wear masks and sanitizers also other things that we need to follow the sop. Yes, in that picture we are happy about our first class in diploma and having a great time with the lecturer. So, what I want to tell is about my lecturer, she was really young until we thought that she was a student like us not until she sat down at the lecturer table in front of the class. Our class with her is really awesome because she really attracts us with a variety of things and games. Back to the topic, here I want to talk about UDL which is related to my short story.
UDL: What is it?
Universal Design of Learning which we called as UDL. It is a system of concepts that provide teachers with a basis for formulating the education to understand the specific needs of all students. As a lecturer, you don’t need to follow the technique on how to teach the students but you need to expand all the unique ideas to make your environment of the class really flexible to all your students for they enjoy your class well. Besides, do you know why they called it ‘universal’? It is because of concepts by all the lecturers on how to teach their students with any type of teaching. It is also a variety of teaching methods to remove any barrier to learning for the students. Moreover, at UiTM, we have three types of UDL which are presentation, expression, and engagement.
The Elements?
For the element in UDL, my preferred is flipped learning. It is because these elements have many types of materials for the students and will make my work easier for teaching the students in the future. For example, many types of flipped learning will help many of the students to understand more about certain subjects. Besides flipped learning, there are many types of elements such as choice assessments, various materials, flexible environments, and so on.
On the other hand, I would like to use flipped learning in my teaching approach. It is because I will help my students to understand more about the topic if I am a Mathematics teacher one day, InsyaAllah. As for my type of teaching, I will ask my students to look up the first topic and give the link that is useful and recommended for the topic. The example type of flipped learning that maybe I will give to my students is YouTube videos, websites in google, and my own notes before the class begins or 3 days before class. In fact, if my students study earlier before the class so that they will be understood more about what topic they did not know and know what to ask their teachers. They also will have extra time to do exercises and notes during class.
For your information, I know the feeling when you do not understand the topic but at the same time, you did not know what to ask your teachers. It is because I am always in the same situation where I just ask my friends about it. But, I don't want my students to be like me as before cause I know that sometimes you did not understand until the third or fourth time of the study. So, with this type of flipped learning on UDL, it will make sure my students can review the video or other type of teaching that I gave as much as they want to make sure they understand well the topic that I teach.
Some another element is flexible environments. As you can see in the picture above, this is my environment during my diploma on Arau, Perlis. Yes, this is my life as a commander. My environment is with them 24 hours I think. It is because we are staying in the same college but separate with boys la, I mean that I roommate with the girls not with my classmates. So what I can say is my environment with them make me feel happy every time I see them. With that, they also help me to finish my assignment and also other things that we need to do.
In fact, for my students in the future also I will give my best to make sure that they get flexible environments that will make them happy every time entering my class. I with open of my heart told my students that they can ask me anytime during my flexible time in my room or maybe call me if they need my help.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, yes for me education nowadays had changed many things to meet the educational requirements according to the current circulation of the Covid-19 pandemic. So, don't you ever compare what had you learned before with what the student learns now and also we don't know what will happen in the future? From that, I hope that parents nowadays never judge their kids or children on their studies because we don't know they are struggling too much during this pandemic. Moreover, with the students' ability nowadays, I think that we can use more methods in technologies to make sure they really enjoy in the class. Hence, teachers also need to be advanced to ensure that their class is interesting. Lastly, I hope that this UDL will involve more often in the future as it is are universal to others and make thing easier than before. So, that's all from me for this topic. I hope you enjoy this blog. See you guys in the next one. Keep smiling, stay positive, and Hidup Kena Chill. Bye!
